Oklahoma Senate Secures Stem Cell Veto

oklahomastemcellA bill in Oklahoma that would have made it a crime to conduct any form of embryonic stem cell research was vetoed by Governor Brad Henry, effectively preventing embryonic stem cell research scientists from being categorized as criminals.

In order to override his veto, Senators needed to secure 32 votes. Unfortunately for them, and luckily for stem cell researchers, they only mustered up 26.

Shortly after the Senate voted to sustain his veto, Gov. Brad Henry issued this statement:

“I want to thank the legislators, particularly members of the Senate, who took the time to educate themselves, cut through the misinformation and cast a vote in favor of life-saving scientific research that can bring hope to thousands of Oklahomans suffering from debilitating diseases.”

The fight may not be over there.

“Oklahoma is a pro-life state, and its citizens are overwhelmingly opposed to research that would result in the death of an unborn child,” said House Speaker Chris Benge, R-Tulsa.

Rep. Doug Cox, R-Grove claims that “This is not about killing babies. This is about cellular biology.”

Opposition leaders still haven’t decided if  they will ask the Senate to vote for an override of House Bill 1326 again – an option available to them at any time.
